Young trees planted in the yard or garden will benefit from some winter protection. An extra few inches of mulch will help insulate the roots. Keep in mind, cold winter winds can desiccate a fragile young tree. A small cage made from garden fencing wrapped in burlap with the top open to rain and snow will make a nice winter home.
Potted trees should be set against the house or placed in an unheated garage or shed. Placing them on the ground allows them to benefit from surface radiant heat. Do not be tempted to store your tree in your house. It needs to stay cold and dormant for the winter months. Potted trees kept in unheated sheds or garages may need a small amount of water every month or so to prevent over drying of the soil.
