Red Upright Varieties
‘BLOODGOOD’
‘Bloodgood’ is the classic red upright Japanese maple. A nice specimen tree for the landscape. The tree leafs out in the spring with bright red leaves which develop into a deep maroon red. The fall color turns to shades of red and orange. This tree is easy to grow and very hardy. ‘Bloodgood’ does well in full sun. Averages 15 feet in height and 8 feet in width in 10 years.
‘EMPEROR 1’
‘Emperor 1’ is a vigorous and fast-growing, red Japanese maple. A perfect choice for a mid-sized tree that reaches 15 feet in height. Also known as ‘Red Emperor’. Its spring color emerges as an extremely deep maroon color and holds its rich, dark red color throughout the summer. ‘Emperor 1’ has a brilliant scarlet display in the fall. A very hardy, heat, and sun-tolerant tree. One of the most popular Japanese maples.
‘FIREGLOW’
‘Fireglow’ is a smaller-sized upright Japanese maple. The leaves are a burgundy red which “glow” in full sun, thus its name. Spring and fall color is a bright red. ‘Fireglow’ is one of the most desired Japanese maples. Prefers full sun. Averages 10 feet in height.
‘MOONFIRE’
‘Moonfire’ is a midsized tree and is considered a shorter version of ‘Emperor 1’. The red leaves on this upright tree have a unique glossy appearance. Moonfire is heat and sun-tolerant. Foliage comes out dark purple in the spring and turns redder in the summer. Its leaves are somewhat translucent and tend to glow when they are backlighted by the sun. Fall color is bright fiery red. Averages 12 feet in height in 10 years.
‘PURPLE GHOST’
‘Purple Ghost’ is a spectacular medium-sized upright tree with a narrow form. The leaves are a vibrant purple with dark maroon veins. Fall color is bright crimson-red. The branching is very dense. Prefers sun/partial shade. Averages 10 feet in height and 5 feet in width in 10 years.
‘TROMPENBURG’
'Trompenburg' is an upright, red Japanese Maple with a vaselike shape. This popular landscaping tree has rich, deep purple-red leaves that hold their color well all summer even in full sun. The lobes radiate laterally and evenly, giving it the appearance of fingers extended from a hand. The curling leaf adds a unique look to ‘Trompenburg’. Fall color is scarlet red. Trompenburg is a very vigorous grower. Average height is 20 feet in 10 years.
‘TROMPENSEN’
‘Trompensen’ is a purple-red upright tree. It has unusual glossy leaves with deeply separated, rolled lobes that look like hands with fingers spread wide. Its rich, showy color lasts through the summer and into fall when the leaves turn crimson red. This tree will reach 10 feet in height in 10 years.
